The Melbourne International Motor Show

Hi good readers. Jump up and down with excitement if, like me, you are on holiday for two weeks. Just me jumping then.

School has broken up for two weeks and provided a much needed break after a hectic ten week term. Very little has been planned for this break other than a few days trips to places yet to be explored or experienced. One such place was the International Motor Show at Melbourne’s Convention / Exhibition centre.

Getting to the venue was a doddle and involved paying $13 for three return train tickets to Melbourne from Geelong (I even managed to wait patiently in a line), a five minute walk from the train station to the exhibition centre, queuing for entrance tickets (kept my cool again) and then entering a huuuuuge building full of motoring splendour (not many show floor babes to ogle, although the cars were so cool I probably wouldn’t have noticed a 50ft woman with three breasts unless she fell on top of me).

The venue was awash with colours, motifs, logos, sounds and interactive content, the latter being provided by the iPad which Apple must have paid big bucks to someone to monopolise this aspect of the event (unless they just wanted to get rid of all the original iPads they had left after bringing out its successor so quickly after the original).

Lucy, one of her friends and I zig-zagged around the show floor drifting from one car manufacturer to the other with little else on our mind than wondering what great cars would be on show. All the usual family car makers were there as well as some of the more prestigious manufacturers like Lamborghini, Maserati, Porsche, Range Rover and AMG Mercedes. The cars with these badges really stood out, for obvious reasons, but mainly because they were gas guzzling, environment wrecking, noise polluting road eaters that unashamedly stuck two fingers up at the mainly eco-friendly, pedestrian aware, family designed vehicles that monopolised the show. Bravo to them as well. Without the super sports car makers we would be left driving in a world full of Peugeots, Kias and Smart cars. Aaaaaaarrrrgggghhh!

After a pit stop for some lunch we headed back to Melbourne’s main railway station (Southern Cross) to catch a train back to Geelong. It’s a shame the ride back wasn’t a little more glamorous but at least we didn’t have to worry about the traffic. Bloomin’ cars!
